Man, I need a new job. I've been saying it for years. I don't care how many times I hear that the economy is doing better and jobs are on the rise from what I see personally I don't believe it. Especially not for what I went to school for. I am a media Comm grad. I did however drop my resume at FM 102.1 they used to be rock 102.1 but they just changed their formats and now its mainly cool alternative rock almost college rock lots of '90's alternative. I hear Soundgarden, Nirvana, Red Hot Chilli Peppers. Lots of good stuff. Anyway, they told me they aren't hiring now but always accepting resumes. They'll keep it on file so hopefully it'll go somewhere. Even if they aren't hiring maybe their sister station which is Jazz will hire me.
here's hoping....
and praying.....

:sending positive vibes you get the job!::: thanks to both of you. I need all the luck I can get. I graduated college in '99 and have been working for the groc. store ever since. It's going to be tough going. Plus like I said they told me they didn't have any positions available.

hey jf, nah, I'm in Milwaukee...Brew City. I think Raks may be however....
I'm really frustrated about my job situation right now. I haven't heard back from the radio station. I my job/work environment. My dad's stressing me about getting stuck where I'm @ until I'm 72, he says. I feel like I'm stuck where I'm at. If I can't get a job at a radio station, I don't know where I want to work. I applied @ Best Buy. More than once they never called me back.
I'm getting super frustrated.

Dropping off resumes is no way to get to a job. You need contacts and friends in the industry you want to work in.
Are you still working in that d**n grocery store?!?!?!
Join a networking group like BNI (Business Networking International). Join your local Chamber of Commerce. Seek out a local trade or business association that deals with that job you are trying to seek. Go to their monthly, weekly meetings. Meet people. Ask them for a job.

*chuckles* That's what pisses me off about the business world. You can rarely get anywhere anymore by doing a good job yourself. You have to know people. Otherwise - I'd already be made.

*chuckles* That's what pisses me off about the business world. You can rarely get anywhere anymore by doing a good job yourself. You have to know people. Otherwise - I'd already be made. WHAT?!?!?!?! That's what business IS!!! It's heavily about knowing people. It's about making contact with people who can buy your goods. It's about meeting people in other industries who sell to the same customer base. Working hard is not working smart. Networking and meeting people is working smart. That's why CEOs play golf. That's why companies spend thousands of dollars on suites at football stadiums. That stuff affects the bottom line. If you can take a potential $20,000,000 client to a football game, talk about life, family, kids, school, beer, you are more likely to sell your product. People get on CEOs and Presidents for golfing when what they are doing is networking. www.mmac.org/display/router.asp?DocID=1www.bniwis.com/www.wawmchamber.com/metromilwaukee.org/liveandplay/index.html?a=showlist&sid=15www.plymouthwisconsin.com/Do I have to do everything. Look, mobyrox, knowing people is numero uno. If you don't know people you don't have an edge. Your resume gets put in a stack. Someone who knows someone gets their resume put on top. They get called in for an interview and get a job when the company isn't even hiring. That's who you want to be. You want your resume on the top of the pile. I get job offers no less than once a month for jobs that pay $50,000+. Why? Because I know people. Because I talk to them about stuff that they care about. I have a customer who sells fire protection service. How do I make a sale? I ask him: "Hey, do you provide service for Company A? Or Company B? I sell my product to them, why don't you come with me when I see them next and you can sell your fire protection service?" I help him, he buys stuff from me. That's the power or networking. That's how you become helpful. That's when you provide a service that your competition doesn't. It's how you corner the market. It how you bring value to yourself.

well, sorry, there's really no networking around here that I'm aware of. I will check out these links though. I don't think the plymouthwisconsin one will help at all because that's a ways away.

yeah, i don't really understand how this stuff works and I don't know if it will help me get a job in radio or the media. I thank you for the links though they may come in useful when I learn more about them. I think those jobs that they help people get are more business oriented (ie corporate stuff).
Then again I am dumb when it comes to this stuff. It just escapes me.

Then again I am dumb when it comes to this stuff. It just escapes me. I don't know where you live, I've never been to Wisconsin. I was just trying to help you out. BNI and chambers of commerce are not really "corporate stuff". They are filled with local businessmen who do all sorts of things. My BNI meeting yesterday had a mortgage lender, Title Company, Landscape designer, sprinkler system installer, Energy conservationist, make up products saleslady, organic vitamin lady, IT guy, website developer.........all sorts of people. I've met furniture salespeople, financial planners, insurance brokers, security systems installers, auto body mechaincs, office supply company owners, handymen, car salesmen, pest control people, copier salespeople, print and radio advertising salesmen, electricians, printers, chiropractors, property managers, plumbers. All kinds of people go to these things and they know all kinds of other people who do all sorts of different things. These people are usually very succesful and if you can get one or two of them to like you they CAN and WILL hook you up. That's why they go to networking events, to share their experience and help people because they know it's gets paid back. They know that their kindness and experience gets passed along to others and it helps them. Are you still working in that d**n deli, mobyrox? You need to get out of there.
